Wine Quotes

women wine quote

I don't mind shaving with a pink Bic razor but I don't want to drink the Virginia Slims of wine.

It's All About Me

I left a 25-year career in Information Technology to follow my bliss, wherever that may lead. I am currently in the middle of a Wine Studies and Enology Program at a Culinary Institute in Italy. Many people ask what I plan to "do" with my wine education and other studies. My response: "This isn't a destination, it's a journey." Not only is my blog my (somewhat self-indulgent) journal of finding new ways to live life - and I mean "live" - but I share the internal shifts that come with taking time to investigate passions more deeply.

Me and My Love of Wine

My favorite grape varietal is the Cabernet Sauvignon. Because of the tannic nature of this grape, I believe it creates some of the most structured amazing wines. Character, depth, interest - all things I like in people as well - are what makes a wine appeal to me. Although I'm in Italy, it was here I had the experience of the Shafer 2002 Hillside Select Cab Sauv - and is one I never will forget.

I love Tuscan and Piedmont wines, as I believe these characteristically Italian wines bottle passion and zeal for life in a unique way. Each type of wine, Barolo, Barbaresco, Super Tuscans, Chiantis, Morellinos, Brunellos, etc. are all expressions of tradition, history, classic bravado. That said, I'm a sucker for a Napa Cab Sauv any day.

The night before mid terms last semester I was able to experience a 1964 Margaux with other members of my wine studies program, hosted by my amazing wine teacher. Wine geeks - we know how to have a great time together.

If it was my last night on the planet, for now I'd say the Il Carbonaione, 2005 would be the bottle I would drink - slowly. Somehow this wine embodies the strength, character, and personality I adore in a cab, yet it is 100% Sangiovese. Since I personally worked the vendemmia 2009 at Podere Poggio Scalette, and have met, interviewed, and been enchanted by the wine maker and his father, this wine would represent the pinnacle of my major life change and journey "Outside the Box." OK, and an exquisite Amarone for dessert. If it's my last night on the planet, I WILL have dessert. :)

I am not currently in the wine industry, as I am studying in Italy. I attend a 1-year "Wine Expertise" program, and am looking to studying in France next year.

Notes from the Vineyard

As Tuscany is (hopefully) emerging from this cold, rainy winter, my thoughts return to the vineyards, and I look forward to this year's wines. Below is a link to our harvest story from a week in October, in the heart of Chianti Classico. I will treasure these memories ... and Sangiovese stains always.
